Building In Ruislip

While Ruislip may be widely known for the Lido and its recent renovations, the area is also home to some very old and historically significant buildings. There are even examples that have their origins as far back as the Norman invasion. In its previous incarnation, Ruislip was a parish in the county of Middlesex and is mentioned in the 1086 great survey known as the Domesday Book.
The two most notable examples of historical building, are the Manor Farm and the old Parish Church of St. Martins, both of which are designated as local heritage sites.

Manor Farm

Ruislip Manor Farm

Manor Farm is located on what was the original site of a Norman motte and bailey dating back to the 9th Century.  In 1451, the moated site was sequestrated by the Crown and granted to King’s College.  Manor Farm functioned a manorial court hall and also as a working farmhouse up to the 1930’s.

St Martin’s Church

Ruislip Church

St Martin's parish church dates back to the 13th century and the original Chancel and Nave still exist and remain in use. There are accounts of a church dating further back to the 11th Century from the Domesday Book but this is believed to have been replaced with the one that stands today. The church was named after Saint Martin of Tours whilst under ownership of the monks of Bec Abbey, and has been nominated a grade B listed building since 1950. Of the buildings that remain, those at the northern end of Ruislip High Street were once the very core of the original village square.

Travel a little down the road from the old priory, and you are back into familiar architectural territory, but the old listed buildings certainly do add a bit of old traditional culture to the local area.
